Kind of you to say so, Brad. I agree with the step-at-a-time approach; it's really the only way to encourage large corporations to get into the 21st century blogging world (unless you have, like, a career death wish or something!)

I've mentioned before my primary reason to start blogging (back in June of '06) was to "find out how it's done" so I could maybe put a bug into someone's ear here at work. I mean, I can easily name four or five good uses for blogs right off the top of my head.

Alas, getting the ear of someone in management important enough (and, uh, willing to champion the cause) is daunting, to say the least. Maybe someday... *sigh*

Robert, it's a very frustrating situation. I don't think there are any magic bullet solutions - it takes a lot of time for corporate cultures to change. But from what I've seen, management doesn't always get the fact that communication is a learned skill. In business, employees tend to accept the communication style of other employees and work around them. Most of my sales training and coaching centers on communication. It works. If a company tried to open things up one step at a time with a concentrated effort to build a better communicating company, and were willing to make an occasional MISTAKE, it could change much more quickly. Maybe your company needs a Chief Communication Officer. You'd be a good one!

Wow, Brad; this is a great discussion (and an excellent analysis) of an ongoing (and upcoming) challenge for businesses of all sizes.

But what's the solution? I, for one, would love for internal blogging to move into the mainstream within my company - I see it as an excellent collaboration tool. But unfortunately, and for the very reasons you mention, management is being overly cautious.

Not that I would do any different if I were them! But again, what's the solution? How do we lower the walls of (fear, concern, legality, propriety - choose your poison) between management and workers? And do it in a constructive way so everyone benefits?

Who's going to dare to take the first step?
