Happy Birthday, Robert Zemeckis

(UPDATE: thanks to Captain Obvious I have his name right now.) Today film director RogerRobert Zemeckis celeberates his 57th birthday. This brilliant filmmaker (and Chicago native) is best known for blockbuster hits including The Polar Express, Cast Away, and Forest Gump. My favorite Zemeckis film is Used Cars, which was made way back in 1980. Starring Kurt Russell and Jack Warden (in a dual role), it is quite possibly the funniest film ever made.

From a sales standpoint, the film is a veritable training manual of how NOT to sell. From a writing standpoint, it features a screenplay as well constructed and paced as you will find in any genre, with unforgettable characters and plot twists. Here are two very brief scenes (about 3 minutes each) for your entertainment (some bad language).

  1. Brad, I can’t believe you didn’t mention the acting ability of the dog! My hubby would have bought the car from Toby! He might have even bought Toby.

  2. Lennie, Zemeckis did a wonderful job directing Toby. You can see these same directorial skills in full bloom with Wilson in Cast Away. :)

  3. Um…. who the hell is ROGER ZEMECKIS?

  4. DUH!

  5. Brad Shorr… Tsk! Tsk! You guys should look up who really directed “Used Cars.”
