Illinois Gross Receipt Tax Bad for Business–Do Something about It!

Just when you think governeering in Illinois couldn’t get any worse, Governor Blagojevich is proposing a Gross Receipts tax (GRT) that would have among its many dire consequences a catastrophic effect on small and mid-size businesses.

Take action at the bottom of this Illinois Chamber of Commerce Web page–before it’s too late.

The GRT is intrinsically unfair, sure to raise prices, sure to drive business out of Illinois, and likely to drive some companies out of business.

Deeply concerned and fearful, many small and mid-size business owners are making contingency plans to scale back their businesses, move them, or even shut them down.

Damage is already being done to the Illinois economy by the mere threat of the GRT. Markets hate uncertainty. The GRT proposal has created an invisible drag on business, as owners wait to see what happens. Expansion plans are not moving forward. Capital investment is not being made. New employees are not being hired. Prices are being raised, whenever and wherever possible.
