Don’t Forget Your Customer on Your Web Site

By Brad Shorr | May 3, 2007

Here is a fantastic post from Daily Blog Tips called 43 Web Design Mistakes You Should Avoid. Well done! Very few Web sites avoid all of them, and very many violate most of them.

Although these mistakes involve everything from programming to content to color scheme, they have one thing in common–they make visiting the Web site hard on the visitor. On this blog I’ve talked a lot about customer-friendly content, but customer-friendly programming and design are just as important. Perhaps more important.

Why do so many Web sites fall victim the these 43 errors?

1. In-house development. Companies that take the do-it-yourself approach may not know all the programming and design options.

2. Failure to test and get feedback. It’s a good idea to let customers play with your Web site before launch. Customer feedback is the best way I know to enhance your site.

3. Not thinking from the customer’s point of view. It’s easy to get caught up in your own message. Fancy graphics and exotic animation are tempting. Be careful–customers may not share your enthusiasms. Most often, they are looking for simple, fast, and easy.
